Among other things in my activist life, I work for Fast for the Earth. The Fast has been ongoing for nearly a year now, with 200+ participants in 24+ nations. Each of us fasts in our own way, on our own schedule, in support of Mother Earth.
Fasting isn’t all we do, but it’s at the heart of what we do.
Why fast? As both a spiritual discipline and as a strategic tool, fasting can
- cleanse the body, mind and soul
- refocus one’s energies on what’s essential
- prepare the self for difficult labor or service
- express kinship with, and support of, those who are suffering under the yoke of oppression
- reclaim or assert power
- leverage public opinion
- wield moral authority
Fasting in unity with others can be quite powerful. So we embrace both solitary and shared fasting as we seek to transform ourselves and our civilization’s relationship with Mother Earth.
If you’d like to be part of the Fast during our second year (beginning August 1), we’d love to welcome you. Sign up here: http://www.fastfortheearth.com/p/sign-up.html
